The Greatest Hindrance: The Silence of the Sent

The Woe of Omission

The paradox of our mission is this: The infinite, omnipotent God needs nothing from His creation, yet He has mandated everything—He has commanded us to speak. The greatest barrier between a lost world and the saving knowledge of God is often the silent disobedience of the very people commissioned to preach the Gospel. If ever wonder wonder why you think you don’t see the Lord moving, (although He is always at working) we must first examine whether His people are actively obeying Him.

The Divine Plan: God Sovereignly Chooses Human Means (Romans 10:14-15)

God, in His absolute sovereignty, has chosen human proclamation as the sovereign means for advancing His kingdom.

Exegesis of Romans 10:14-15

“How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”

Paul’s Question (The Chain) The Theological RealityThe Believer’s Mandate
“How will they call?”Prayer (calling on the Lord) presupposes belief.Believe in the Lord (Romans 10:13).
“How are they to believe?”Paul answers this elsewhere by stating: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”(Romans 10:17. The Gospel is the power that generates belief.Ensure they hear the message.
“How are they to hear?”Hearing requires a dedicated messenger.Proclaim the Word faithfully.
“How are they to preach?”The final step is obedient deployment by the commissioned preacher.Go and actively proclaim the Gospel.

The Privilege of Means: God has lovingly granted His people the profound privilege of participating in His saving work. The cycle of salvation—belief flowing from hearing—is ordained by Him. It pleases God to use our weakness to demonstrate His power.

The Hindrance of Silence: When Christians choose silence, they break this ordained chain in willful disobedience. The silence of the saved becomes the spiritual deafening of the unreached.

The Sobering Imperative: Driven by Accountability and the Fear of the Lord

Evangelism is not just a matter of love; it is a matter of profound personal accountability rooted in the recognition of Christ’s authority.

Exegesis of 2 Corinthians 5:10-11

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade people..”

The Motivation of Accountability: Paul clearly states that the drive to evangelize is directly tied to the coming judgment. Because we know we must give an account , we are compelled to urgently warn and persuade others.

The Woe of Omission (1 Cor. 9:16): This duty brings a divine compulsion that transcends convenience: “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” Evangelism is not a spiritual luxury; it is a binding ethical necessity, a debt we owe because we have been saved and sent.

The Power of Loving Obedience

When believers preach the Gospel and live in loving obedience to the ethical demands of Christ, the power of God is visibly demonstrated.

The Ethical Outflow: The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) is the definitive ethical demand on the life of a follower, binding our love for God (vertical) to our action for neighbor (horizontal).

A Light Unhindered: When believers preach the Gospel and live in loving obedience, the spiritual fruit is maximized because the message of grace is delivered without the hindrance of hypocritical living. The world sees the Lord moving in our consistent character and courageous voice.

The Sin of Comfort: The greatest hindrance remains the disobedience of comfort. This sin of omission is prioritizing personal peace over the King’s mandate, (James 4:17) and directly stifles the visible flow of the Holy Spirit’s work, in a way preventing the world from seeing the power of God manifested through the life of His people.

Conclusion:

The absence of visible Gospel light is often a reflection of the spiritual stagnation within the church. God’s power is always sufficient, but His established will demands our obedience. We must reject the comfort that leads to silence and embrace the sacred risk of proclamation, not because God needs us, but because He lovingly chooses to use us and requires an account of our faithfulness.

The question for every believer is not, “Is God moving?” but rather, “Am I obeying where God told me to go, thus honoring the privilege He has given me and avoiding the woe of silence?”
